Announcing the SWFFix project

SWFFix is a new joint project from myself and Bobby van der Sluis. The project’s goal is to replace SWFObject and UFO with a single method that is (hopefully) more standards compliant and doesn’t rely entirely on Javascript.

We’ve put up a dev blog on the site, and will be asking for help and feedback throughout the development cycle, so head over and watch the blog for updates in the coming weeks.

Bobby also has a great A List Apart article out today that talks about the problems with current Flash embed techniques.

  1. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Although I love SWFObject, I look forward to seeing what you guys can come up with. Keep up the good work!

  2. Do you have an estimated timeframe for when the project will be completed, (or in alpha/beta stages)? Will you conform with current standards, or will you try to push for a new one?

  3. We don’t have any official time frames, but we are very close to an Alpha release – hopefully in the next two weeks or so.

We want to conform to web standards as closely as possible without giving the users a degraded experience.

  4. Wanted to drop a note of thanks. Your work on SWFObject has been a godsend. Great news to hear you’re workin’ on an ultimate version! Perhaps adding SWFAddress support (or folding it in) would be my only concern.

  5. The swfobject lib has bug on IE 7 vista. It would be great to have a new version that support all kind of versions. Keep working dudes ! :)

  6. Great work…i love you.

Is it just me or, i cant open external links in the swf, like a link to myspace trough my swf?

Nevertheless…Best of luck for the Future.

  7. I open external files without a problem, but I’ve only tried it on the beta v1.5 – I wish it would become official already!

  8. Can you explain the basics SWFFix? Like how can this dynamic work without relying entirely on Javascript?

Please delete my former comment (plus this line) as I’ve fixed some things.

  10. It actually does work in some browsers, but it’s not ‘proper’ because it uses innerHTML to write HTML to the page. In order to be fully commpliant with application/xhtml+xml it would need to use DOM methods to create the object tag, but this is too buggy in most browsers to properly support.

  11. SWFFix sounds very promising. I have one question. Express Install is a great feature and it would be great to get everyone updated to the newest plugin but how would you advise dealing with platforms like the nintendo Wii? I know the Wii natively supports only flash7, will express install still work on such platforms?

  13. hey, look at this… The Backstreet Boys use SWFObject on their site. Haha, check out BackstreetBoys.com and view source, you’ll see they have the SWFER JS lol. Well, I guess that means either 1) SWFObject is so good, professionals rely on it; or 2) The Backstreet Boys don’t have professionals, and SWFObject is so easy to use, even The Backstreet Boys can do it hahahaa
